A Kuni Foundation Transformation Grant “transforms” a house into a home in rural Washington.
A stately 1912 house in Cosmopolis, Washington is getting a new life thanks to The Arc of Grays Harbor. With a $300,000 Transformation Grant from the Kuni Foundation, the organization purchased the five-bedroom house in April. The house had been vacant for at least five years, but in the house, The Arc of Grays Harbor saw the promise of home.
“As is the plot of every episode of This Old House, the repairs necessary were more than were immediately obvious,” said Jeff Meeks, Executive Director of The Arc of Grays Harbor. “No system has been left untouched. The floors have all be stripped down to the original tight-grained fir flooring and it looks fantastic.”
Thanks to the hard work of volunteer Treasurer Dan Baskins who has been on site managing the project, the house is now a six-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bathroom house that will be a comfortable and welcoming home for residents.
The Arc of Grays Harbor is a nonprofit organization that advocates for and supports a better quality of life for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. As a part of their strategic plan, the organization is committed to increasing options for community-based supported living for people with IDD. This house will provide affordable options for people who wish to transition to community-based housing or who are at risk of losing their housing because their SSI doesn’t cover their rent.
The Arc House will officially become a home when residents move in later this fall. We can’t wait to welcome them home. Congratulations, The Arc of Grays Harbor!
